How to shoot a dark dining room without killing the dark
Low-light restaurant photography in Abu Dhabi: how I expose, white balance and grade a dim dining room so it still reads like the evening it actually was.
Most dark dining rooms are photographed as though the darkness were a mistake. A light goes up, the shadows fill, and the room in the picture is not the room the guest sat in.
Expose for the brightest thing you care about
I meter on the plate or the face, not the average. Everything behind it is allowed to fall away. A modern sensor holds more shadow detail than the scene needs, so the safer move is to protect the highlight and lift later only where the eye actually goes.
Leave the white balance warm
Tungsten stays tungsten. Correcting a warm room to neutral is the fastest way to make a restaurant look like a showroom. I set a fixed Kelvin value for the whole shoot so the set grades consistently.
Shoot around service, not through it
The honest frames happen in the gaps — before prep, between seatings, after the last table clears. Nobody is performing, and the room looks like itself.
Grade for the memory, not the catalogue
Contrast goes into the midtones, not the blacks. A slight lift at the toe keeps the shadows readable on a phone screen, which is where most of these images will be seen.
